Waypoint Sanctuary Learning Progression Pathways
Everyone comes to the internal arts of Meditation, Qi Gong, Tai Chi, and Wudang Kung Fu for their own reasons. Some to heal particular ailments, some to promote general wellness and longevity, some to train martial arts, some to seek inner peace, and even enlightenment. Some want to become the next generation of teachers- to hold and transmit these ancient, time-honored practices to future generations.
Some come to be part of a community of individuals working on themselves. Some come because friends or family asked them to, and that’s great too! Thank you for trying something new for yourself!
Some come for one, or a few reasons, and stay for another. Whatever it is, we’re here to help point you along your way, and guide you towards what you seek.
Navigating all of what the internal arts have to offer can be confusing and overwhelming, so this page serves as a map for the various avenues of progression students might take at Waypoint Sanctuary depending on their individual backgrounds, interests, and aspirations.
I suggest everyone interested in these practices begins with meditation. For some that might be their main interest and form of practice. From there, if the student wishes to progress into moving meditation practices, Qi Gong classes will ease them into learning these dynamic mind, body, breathing, exercises. Just as with meditation, there are many styles and systems of Qi Gong that a student may study and practice, depending on one’s interests and goals. From there, a student will be well primed to begin learning Tai Chi, if they wish, and then from there, the more demanding Wudang Kung Fu, if they wish.
The Meditation Path
Stillness Meditation is the cornerstone of the internal arts. Internal principles cultivated in stillness mediation can then be applied into the moving meditations offered through Qi Gong, Tai Chi, and Wudang Kung Fu. Meditation is both the foundation and peak of internal cultivation.
The Qi Gong Path
Often referred to as moving meditation, Qi Gong “Energy Work/Skills” brings the heightened awareness cultivated in stillness meditation to movement exercises of varying complexities, for various purposes including health/healing, spiritual cultivation, and martial arts.
The Tai Chi Path
Based on the Daoist philosophy of Tai Ji, and Yin/Yang, Tai Ji Quan is the most well known style of Internal Kung Fu/ Martial Arts (Nei Jia Quan). Tai Chi, as a martial art, has been made famous for its soft, smooth, graceful, health supporting movements, which has made it popular as a wellness and longevity supporting exercise all over the world. Tai Ji Quan contains within it, a lot of Qi Gong principles and practices.
Wudang Kung Fu Path
Building on Meditation, Qi Gong, and Tai Chi, The Wudang Kung Fu Path includes other styles of Internal Martial Arts, like Tai Chi, that focus on energy awareness, and make use of Daoist philosophy and cosmology as guiding principles. These include styles such as Xing Yi Quan, Ba Gua Zhang, Tai He Quan, Liang Yi Quan, Wu Xing Quan, and more- including traditional weapons such as staff, sword, saber, spear, and more.
