Newsletter 1 - July 2025

Greg at Beavertail, Jamestown RI

A new moon, a new newsletter. That’s why you’re getting this now. We’re here in the midst of the new moon, the start of a new lunar month. I’ve been meaning to get this newsletter going since I opened Waypoint Sanctuary 5 months ago, and the peak of the new moon this month was yesterday, July 24th- but alas, better late than never.

In Daoist culture new and full moons are considered especially energetically powerful times of the month. Just as we see the tides around us here in coastal Rhode Island pulled to their greatest heights over these few days each month, deeper aspects of ourselves can also be pulled to the surface. Thoughts, feelings, emotions, and even aches and pains can be heightened. So, Daoist sages realized our spiritual and life energy is being exaggerated during this time, and identified that doing meditation, qigong, Tai Chi, acupuncture and other self-cultivation/healing work during the new and full moons could greatly potentiate one’s progress and evolution on their unique path.

The type of cultivation, or practice, or healing work one does can take many forms, but all begin with the awareness that it’s a time of heightened energy. Next, as when beginning any meditation, qigong, or tai chi, you generally need to try to relax into it. Be natural. If you’re feeling the strain of bodily pain, thoughts, feelings, and emotions, you don’t have to turn away from them, and you don’t have to overly dig into them, but you have to take a little time to let things settle and clear so you can focus on what you want to focus on. Do whatever you can that relaxes you, to feel that your healing/ self-cultivation is coming from a place of natural spontaneity not forced anxiety… a walk, a shower, a song, a show, a meal, or maybe just a few good deep breathes can do it- to help release the tension of anything that might be bothering you so that you can ride the tidal wave to new heights, rather than get tossed around in it. Remember, It’s a time of heightened energy that pulls at all our strings, but with awareness and intention we can emphasize from within what we want to work on and grow, so that those heart-strings don’t get pulled and twisted into tighter and bigger knots, but they get teased out and brought into greater alignment.

Remember also, just as sure as it comes in, the tide recedes, and things will normalize again soon.

I’ve added some new weekly classes this month, now offering back-to-back classes on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays with classes at 4:15-5:15 then 5:30-6:30 for those who are ready to take their training and practice to the next level.

Tai Chi Foundations: Thursdays 5:30pm; Saturdays 9:00am; Beginner friendly drop-in class perfect for those who have wanted to try Tai Chi but don’t know where to start.

Daoist Meditation: Tuesdays 4:15pm ; Each week covers basic methods for posture and relaxation, and then various guided Daoist meditation practices.

5 Elemental Animal Qi Gong: Tuesdays 5:30 ; Learn five meditative movement forms that combine the 5 elemental energies of water, wood, fire, earth, and metal with observations/mimicry of power animals to balance and strengthen the functioning of the energy channels and their associated internal organs.

Wudang Kung Fu Foundations on Wednesdays at 5:30-6:30pm ; For those ready for something a little more vigorous, but still mindfully centered in the breath and body. One hour of stretching, breathing, punching, kicking, and more!
